04 March 2025 – Call to participate: industry decarbonisation strategy workshop
The NCPC will host a workshop to discuss the decarbonisation of industry at the upcoming Africa Energy Indaba at the Cape Town ICC on Tuesday, 4 March 2025. The workshop, held in partnership with the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (the dtic) will seek industry and stakeholder input into the key focus areas for focus and support by the dtic strategy.
Climate change poses a significant threat to the environment, business and human lives. Additionally, economic sustainability is undermined by the impacts of climate change, highlighting the need for urgent action to protect the planet and its ecosystems. In response, governments around the world are implementing carbon taxes and similar measures to reduce emissions.
South Africa’s coal-generated energy further intensifies a need to support industry to reduce its emissions. The Climate Change Act, ratified in the government gazette on 23 July 2024, aims to facilitate these efforts through effective policy. The Act promotes a just transition and sustainable development, with various government structures responsible for developing strategies to support this initiative.
In light of this context, the NCPC workshop aims to consult with industry stakeholders and gather input for a decarbonisation strategy for industry, to be led by the dtic and supported by the work of the NCPC and UNIDO, amongst others. The 2025 Africa Energy Indaba provides an excellent platform to host such a workshop, as like-minded experts gather to interrogate Africa’s energy, and by extension carbon, future.
The Indaba, titled “African Energy: Pathway to Prosperity – Committed to Delivering a Strong Future,” aligns with the NCPC’s mission to facilitate the transition to a low-carbon economy, particularly focussing on decarbonising energy-intensive sectors such as metals.
“We believe the Indaba presents a tremendous opportunity to address decarbonisation and to update the industry on specific projects we are implementing in partnership with UNIDO. We urge all who can to attend in Cape Town or online,” says NCPC Director, Ndivhuho Raphulu.
Raphulu notes that decarbonisation is particularly critical to heavy industry dependent on exports, “The European Union’s carbon border adjustment mechanism (CBAM) severely threatens our export markets. Through these projects, we can better support the industry through policy development and capacity building.”
Raphulu will also moderate a session on promoting regional cooperation for a pan-African energy exchange at the Africa Energy Indaba. NCPC Skills Development Project Manager, Dr Zenzile Rasmeni, will serve as a panellist in the Climate Resilience session.
