South African Circular Manufacturing Initiative stakeholder workshop

The National Cleaner Production Centre (NCPC) invites you to join an in-person workshop for the South African Circular Manufacturing Initiative (SACMI).

The workshop forms part of the ongoing process to develop a national Circular Manufacturing STI Strategy. It will bring together industry stakeholders, academic experts, and public sector partners for in-depth discussions and focused group sessions aimed at identifying priorities, opportunities, and innovation pathways for a circular manufacturing economy.

SACMI is an initiative of the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation that will support circularity in manufacturing by creating an opportunity to embed circular economy STI in the national system of innovation and building local and international research partnerships that will benefit the South African manufacturing sector.

Workshop Objective

The objective of this workshop is to share the draft Circular Manufacturing Strategy, to gather comments, critiques and valuable inputs on the first draft strategy from the South African research community, industry experts and stakeholders from the priority sector (Textile, Steel and Automotive).

More specifically, the workshop aims to:

• To present and reflect on the progress of the South African Circular Manufacturing Initiative to date and first draft of the Circular Manufacturing Strategy.
• To set the scene through presentations by leading experts on the state of circular manufacturing in South Africa.
• To solicit structured, participatory feedback from stakeholders on the Draft SACMI Strategy.
• To facilitate breakaway group discussions to identify sector-specific needs, opportunities, and potential STI interventions that will enable circularity in manufacturing.
• Gain insight on the resonance of the strategy with the experiences of academics specialising in the circular economy (CE).
