Internship: Resource Efficiency and Cleaner Production (RECP) in the Tourism and Hospitality Sector

The Department of Tourism, in partnership with the CSIR, has an internship opportunity at the National Cleaner Production Centre, South Africa (NCPC-SA). The internship is a 24-month programme and will commence in May 2024.

The purpose of the Internship is to provide Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) engineering, environmental and science graduates an opportunity to gain practical green skills workplace experience through the NCPC-SA’s structured resource efficiency and cleaner production (RECP) methodology. These positions are based in various provinces in South Africa.

The programme will aim to equip interns with RECP skills, namely energy management, water efficiency, waste minimisation, and green finance, amongst others. The programme will also provide graduates with business and workplace skills.

The aim is to transfer sufficient knowledge, skills and experience to the interns to allow them to consult to the Tourism Sector on RECP solutions and projects, whilst simultaneously supporting tourism and hospitality facilities to implement RECP in their operations. Successful candidates will be certified as Energy-, Water-, and Waste specialists in the Tourism and Hospitality Sector.

Interns will be employed by the Council for Scientific and industrial Research (CSIR) for two years and placed at selected tourism and hospitality sites around South Africa. Under supervision, the interns will be required to:

  • Attend and complete the complete end-user and expert-level RECP training programme;
  • Compile the host establishment’s pre-visit questionnaire, assessment report and a case study;
  • Support the host establishment’s maintenance team in identifying and implementing RECP opportunities;
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of standard operating procedures for the continuous improvement of RECP.

In addition, the successful candidate must be willing to:

  • Be hosted and accommodated on-site for full duration of this internship.
  • Take responsibility and custodianship of the employer’s work equipment, including PPE and an assigned tablet.
  • Undergo RECP training examination at the end of each module.

As a minimum requirement, applicants must be a South African citizen between 18 and 35 years of age, and in possession of an N6 diploma in Electrical/Mechanical Engineering or Degree qualification in Natural Science or Environmental science.

Preference will be given to applicants with previous learnership experience or training in resource efficiency and cleaner production.
