The project "Accelerating the Decarbonisation of South Africa's Steel Industry" is a large multi-year, and multi-partner project led by the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO), in partnership with the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) and Guidehouse Germany.
The project is currently in the Detailed Preparation Phase and will be submitted for funding to the The Mitigation Action Facility Action Facility in April 2026. This following the successful hosting of the national validation workshop of the project at the dtic campus in Pretoria on 2 March 2026.
The workshop presented the proposed project scope and components and gathered insights from national stakeholders to ensure that the project is aligned with the needs of South Africa's steel industry.
"The steel industry has long been a foundational part of our industrial base, which is why the dtic requested this project to help the sector stay competitive as global markets shift toward low-emission steel," said Gerhard Fourie, Chief Director of Green Industries at the dtic.
It aims to catalyse industrial decarbonization in South Africa by driving the shift to low-emission steel production through the uptake of innovative technologies, the establishment of a dedicated financial mechanism, and the development of an enabling policy framework.
UNIDO and its partners successfully submitted a Project Concept to the Mitigation Action Facility which was selected as one of seven more than 500 global submissions to advance to the detailed preparatory phase.
