About the Eco-Industrial Parks Programme
The Global Eco-Industrial Parks Programme is a national focus area that seeks to revitalise and demonstrate the viability and benefits of greening industrial parks. The eco-industrial park project cements the NCPC-SA’s role to drive industry’s transition towards a green economy.
The GEIPP also supports the Industrial Park Revitalisation Programme (IPRP) of the dtic, matching the core focus areas of economic, social, and environmental benefit in support of the national priorities to address poverty, employment, inequality, and growth.
Currently, the NCPC-SA project focuses on three government-owned EIP parks – East London Industrial Development Zone (SEZ), Phuthaditjhaba Industrial Park and Ekandustria while six more parks have been assessed. The NCPC-SA capacitates the parks through various RECP interventions including online workshops.
The GEIPP was launched by the NCPC-SA in 2020 following a successful pilot project in 2018-19. The NCPC-SA is a programme of the Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (the dtic).
The project is funded by the Swiss State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO) and implemented internationally by UNIDO. South Africa is one of seven countries selected to participate in the GEIPP with the NCPC-SA as a national implementation partner from 2020-23.
