Power Quality Principles

The Fundamental Principles of Power Quality is presented as an end-user course for delegates with a basic knowledge of electrical systems, and will cover standards in power quality, regional regulatory practices, rights of users and obligations of utilities, and a legal perspective to protecting users of electrical energy.

The course will include :

  • Southern Africa context to power quality (PQ)
  • fundamental principles of power quality in terms of voltage and current waveform quality,
  • voltage waveform events
  • an introduction to reporting of power quality measured against the NRS048 code and international standards.

The expert course, the Application of Power Quality Principles is aimed at delegates with electrical, mechanical or electro-mechanical backgrounds and a minimum of 3 years of field experience or other suitably qualified candidates with 5 years of experience.

The course commences with a classroom-based tuition of 4 days, which will include tutorials, data analysis and reporting.

Over the 9-12 months of the expert course, delegates will be required to perform a Power Quality Assessment at their candidate site, and write and present a Power Quality Assessment report for the site. Monthly online webinars will be held during which delegates will report progress; mentoring and feedback will be provided by facilitators. A final written exam with the quality assured candidate plant report will be used to test candidate’s proficiency.

Successful completion of the Fundamentals of Power Quality Principles End User course is the minimum criteria for application to the Expert Course. Please contact our skills development team for additional criteria and application information for our expert courses.

CPD Accreditation

All NCPC-SA courses are accredited by ECSA and CPD letters will be issued to candidates that attend all sessions of a particular course. Attendance will be monitored via the video function of the on-line training platform.

Certification

Candidates will have an option to write a test at the end of the training. The test is not compulsory, however, NCPC-SA certificates of competence will only be issued to candidates who pass the test with a minimum score of 70%.
