Process Heating Systems Optimization (PHSO)

  1. Course Objectives This 32-hour training programme aims to provide an in-depth technical information on undertaking an industrial process heating system and waste heat reduction assessment and making improvements to industrial process heating. Additionally, it aims to provide hands-on training for using all the US DOE steam system Best Practices software tools in the field when conducting an industrial process heating system assessment. Process heating accounts for most of all process energy used in the South African manufacturing sector. This training introduces process heating and energy-saving measures for industrial process heating equipment such as furnaces, dryers, ovens, heaters and kilns. This is a theoretical course with no fieldwork involved.
  2. Learning Outcomes During this training, candidates will learn to perform a heat balance for a heating system, overall waste heat opportunities in various industries, and typical waste heat recovery methods. Candidates will be introduced to DOE’s MEASUR tool (Process Heating Assessment module). MEASUR helps survey furnaces and heaters, identify major energy-using equipment, prioritize improvement opportunities, and assess available methods to improve thermal efficiency in industrial plants. This is not a Basic or Introductory course but relies on knowledge of relevant concepts and principles. The following topics will be covered extensively:
  • What is Process Heating
  • Process Heating Losses
  • Process Heating System Components (Combustion and Electricity-based PH Systems)
  • Major Areas for Energy Savings in Process Heating
  • Waste Heat Management Options
  • Combustion Air Preheating Savings Measures
  • Waste Heat to Power Applications
  • ASME Process Heating Standard (ASME EA-1_2009) and Guideline (ASME-EA-1G-2010) to conduct a process heating assessment.

Target Audience Plant Utility Managers and Technicians, Plant Engineering, Operations and Process Managers, Engineering and Environmental Science under- and post-graduates, ESCOs, CEMs, Process Heating Systems Vendors, Academia. d. Entry Criteria It is advised that you work in an area that is related to Process heating system operation and/or maintenance

Process Heating System end-user Training

CPD Accreditation

All NCPC-SA courses are accredited by ECSA and CPD letters will be issued to candidates that attend all sessions of a particular course. Attendance will be monitored via the video function of the on-line training platform.

Certification

Candidates will have an option to write a test at the end of the training. The test is not compulsory, however, NCPC-SA certificates of competence will only be issued to candidates who pass the test with a minimum score of 70%.
